FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT DENTAL VENEERS

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-shaped shells made of porcelain or resin composite materials that fit over your natural teeth to hide flaws such as discoloration, chips, and cracks. Veneers dramatically improve the look of your smile without orthodontics or invasive procedures.

How do dental veneers improve my smile?

In addition to covering stains, cracks, and chips, dental veneers can be used to:

  • Lengthen or widen teeth
  • Reshape teeth
  • Cover gaps
  • Cover crooked or twisted teeth
  • Hide uneven or worn-down teeth
How are dental veneers placed?

Dental veneers last up to 15 years or more with proper care. Because your surface enamel was removed in preparation for the veneers, if your current set becomes damaged or wears out, you will need to replace them.

You should avoid biting hard foods with your veneers. If you grind your teeth at night, your dentist can fit you for a custom-made mouth guard to protect your dental veneers.

we make the pain

GO AWAY

Crowns are often used to stabilize one’s bite. Years of clenching or teeth grinding (often during sleep) can wear away valuable tooth structure, which can lead to bite changes and pain in the TMJ. The jaw joints are the “temporomandibular joints” (TMJ) located just in front of your ears. These joints attached the lower jaw to your skull. The joints are what allow you to move your mouth and jaw in multiple directions. If the TMJ is irritated, impaired, or weakened, these joints can become inflamed. Some people, as a result, develop temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

A common sign of TMD is migraines or frequent headaches that cause moderate to severe pain. It’s typically described as a throbbing sensation and focused on one area of the head. Migraines may also stimulate nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Fortunately, Dr. Sabrina Salim has effective treatments for TMD and migraines. She’ll personally work with you to get to the true origin of the problem and find the best course of treatment for you.

ABOUT DENTAL CROWNS

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth that replaces or covers the part of your tooth that appears above the gumline. Dr. Salim may recommend a dental crown to save a decayed or broken tooth that might otherwise require extraction.

Dental crowns are also used to:

  • Strengthen a tooth weakened by decay or fillings
  • Fix a chipped, broken, or cracked tooth
  • Cap a dental implant
  • Cap a tooth after a root canal procedure
  • Stabilize a dental bridge
  • Hide a discolored or defective tooth
What are dental crowns made of?

At Faircourt Dental Smile Studio, Dr. Salim uses dental crowns made from a variety of materials, including:

  • Porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Resin
  • Gold alloy
  • Nickel
What happens when I get a dental crown?

If you’re getting a dental crown to save a decayed tooth, Dr. Salim first removes all of the infected matter. After your tooth is cleaned, she fills and seals your tooth with a rubbery material called gutta-percha. The gutta-percha stabilizes your tooth and protects it from bacteria.

Dr. Salim then reshapes your tooth so that it can accept the replacement crown. After taking impressions and determining the correct color for your new crown, she sends this information to our custom dental lab. In the meantime, you get an exquisite temporary dental crown to protect your tooth.

When your custom-designed crown is ready, Dr. Salim removes the temporary dental crown and cements the custom-designed dental crown in place.

If I am getting a bridge, do I still need a dental crown?

A dental bridge is a span of false teeth that has a crown on either end. The dental crowns need to be attached to abutment teeth (the teeth on either side of the gap). Either natural teeth or dental implants can serve as abutment teeth.

If you’re using your natural teeth as abutment teeth, Dr. Salim reshapes these abutment teeth down so they can accept the dental crowns and stabilize the dental bridge. If you’re using dental implants as abutment teeth, the crowns on the dental bridge are placed over the implants.

If you have a broken, chipped, or missing tooth, contact the experts at Faircourt Dental Smile Studio to find out if a dental crown is the best solution for you — call us.
