GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY

With all the advancements in dentistry, have you ever wondered why dental cleanings are done the same way we have for decades? Not anymore!!

At Faircourt Dental, we are proud to introduce our patients to the biggest “game changer” in dental hygiene, Guided Biofilm Therapy. Gone are the days when we scrape our teeth with large, bulky instruments and then polish them with abrasive pastes. With Guided Biofilm Therapy (or GBT for short), we disrupt, kill and remove billions of bacteria from the tooth and root structure using a warm water spray. This spray contains water along with a naturally occurring sugar alcohol called Erythritol. Erythritol aids in removing this clear sticky film of bacteria and reduces the speed at which it grows back. The power of the water spray smashes the bacteria cells, killing them on contact. The procedure is painless and feels like a gentle massage. It is backed by science and is proven to be the most effective, gentle, and comprehensive way to clean teeth.

Most patients have described it as very relaxing. The colored solution used to reveal the invisible biofilm is a great motivator for patients as well as they can see for themselves what is being left behind with their current home care.

Once the biofilm is removed, an ultrasonic and/or hand scaler is used to remove any hardened deposits that may still remain on the teeth.

Dental cleanings are faster and far less uncomfortable than traditional scaling and polishing.

Help You Avoid the Misery of TMJ Disorders

Crowns are often used to stabilize one’s bite. Years of clenching or teeth grinding (often during sleep) can wear away valuable tooth structure, which can lead to bite changes and pain in the TMJ. The jaw joints are the “temporomandibular joints” (TMJ) located just in front of your ears. These joints attached the lower jaw to your skull. The joints are what allow you to move your mouth and jaw in multiple directions. If the TMJ is irritated, impaired, or weakened, these joints can become inflamed. Some people, as a result, develop temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

A common sign of TMD is migraines or frequent headaches that cause moderate to severe pain. It’s typically described as a throbbing sensation and focused on one area of the head. Migraines may also stimulate nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Fortunately, Dr. Sabrina Salim has effective treatments for TMD and migraines. She’ll personally work with you to get to the true origin of the problem and find the best course of treatment for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT GENERAL DENTISTRY AND ORAL HYGIENE

Does it hurt? My teeth are sensitive?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (or GBT for short) is typically pain free.  The water is warm and so even those with sensitive teeth tolerate the procedure well. In extreme cases a topical anesthetic can be used.

Is this as effective as the old way?

YES! GBT is actually MORE effective and therapeutic than “the old way”.  It can reach areas around the teeth that traditional instruments cannot.  It can be used on all types of dentists like dental implants and crowns.

Can this be used on braces?

Most definitely.  It is the preferred way to clean around braces.

It sounds messy. Is it?

To reduce the water spray from landing on your face, a facial covering is used.  Patients are able to see through the mesh but stay dry.  If you’re claustrophobic, the facial covering does not have to be used, meaning you may feel a light mist of water on your face.

Do you still have to scrape my teeth?

Some light scaling (aka “scraping”) on teeth may need to be done.  How much depends on each individual patient but for the majority the amount of scaling is greatly reduced with GBT.
